Teaching math

Just remembered something that- to me- was very thought provoking during Fawn's Math Circle on Monday.   It's such an easy thing to do and I've seen people recommend this before.  If you want to introduce student to more interesting problem solving experiences, pick out interesting problems from the text (challenge problems, end of problem set, enrichment or extension problems from your textbooks supplemental materials, your own collection, etc.) and then do this:

Remove the question.

Simply present the problem with no question.   Fawn pulled this one on us at the Math Circle and everybody loved the idea.   

I just remembered where I saw this recently!  It was at one of Steve Lepire's gatherings where he showed us all the Dan Meyer TED talk.  Dan Meyer told us to do essentially the same thing.   Great minds think alike (Dan and Fawn).

So, consider this.   Pick out 1 or 2 challenging problems for next week.   Present them at the beginning of class so everyone has a chance to consider them.  Remove the question.  That will eliminate any kids from shouting out the answer and allow kids to have more ownership over the problem itself.  

Of course, some kids will ask, "where is the question?" And this reminds me of a great scene in the movie The Matrix where Neo asks how a child can bend a spoon with his mind.  The child responds, "the secret is realizing that there is no spoon."   Let that one sink in...

An old dog can learn new tricks

I am currently piloting an Algebra 1 textbook from Big Ideas. I've been teaching math for 12 years (or so) and I spent a couple of decades before that reinforcing the idea that I know everything. So, when I started the year, I used the textbook the same way I always had. I teach the way I feel most comfortable and then use the book for problem sets. This week I decided to learn something new.

I read the suggested methodology in the book and took the kids through an exploration in the prescribed manner. The lesson was regarding graphing linear equations using intercepts. I started the kids off with a warm up: How many pairs of numbers have a sum of 7?  I was surprised and delighted to see the responses.

First of all, all 30 freshmen were immediately engaged. I didn't see anyone not discussing the problem. Clearly they were intrigued. This was 8am Friday morning! 

Then I started wandering around the class to see and hear what they were discussing.  I noticed one student had simply written infinaty on his paper (the well known alternative spelling to infinity).  At first I was not sure what he meant. Then another student called me over and asked whether he could use negative numbers as well as positive numbers. The light bulb started to illuminate over my head. I hadn't specified that you could only use whole numbers. With no restrictions, some of the kids became quite innovative.

Another student asked whether they could use fractions and yet another asked about decimals. I was so excited. In my classroom, kids are seated in groups of 4, so no matter who had the idea, others became aware of the possibilities very quickly.

I got the attention of the whole class and took some time to discuss the idea that based on my loosely worded question,you could have an infinite number of pairs. Then I asked students to limit themselves to non-fraction and non-decimal positive numbers.

I asked how many pairs again.  Several students volunteered that you could have 4 pairs, 0+7, 1+6, 2+5 and 3+4.  So then I asked the class whether 4+3 would be considered another pair. One girl loudly exclaimed, "mind blown."

After this warm up activity, we proceeded with the Exploration in the Student Journal where we guessed what pairs of numbers would satisfy the equation 3x + 2y = 6?  Eventually one girl figured out that you could easily find a pair if you set x or y to zero. 

All in all it was a very satisfying lesson. Thanks, Big Ideas!

Video in the classrom: Flipgrid vs Seesaw

Several years ago, I flipped my classroom so that kids watch my lectures via video at home at night.  I've stuck to the flipped classroom because I believe in the power of video.   So, I have also been interested in getting my students to make their own videos.   I've experimented with software like Explain Everything and Showme, but I've been reading about Seesaw and Flipgrid and so, today I tried them both.

If you compare the two videos, you'll notice that the Seesaw video was fuzzier.  The Flipgrid app gave me the ability to use the flashlight feature on my phone to brighten up the image and the app also allowed me to touch the screen and reset the focus.   The Seesaw app did not seem to have these features.  Also, you'll notice that when I get the "share" link from each app, the Flipgrid app provides a much shorter, easier to read link.  This will make a big difference when I'm trying to share videos with students via Twitter, remind.com or even by writing on the whiteboard.

Of course there are many more features that Seesaw has in their web application and so this is not meant to be an overall comparison of the two products.  But for this one application, quick sharing of student videos, I'm liking what Flipgrid has to offer.

Homework in the secondary math class

As a follower of math dignitaries in the Twitter world, I am aware of various opinions on homework for math class.   I am surprised to see some teachers advocating doing away with it.   Of the teachers that I've read about, they are mostly elementary teachers and I can live with that.  However, as a high school teacher, I am not ready to give up homework yet.

Of course, like any subject there are gray areas.  The discussion shouldn't be, homework or no homework.   To me, the concern should be, did the student develop an understanding of the material in class.   If they did not, then choices must be made.   The student can choose to be satisfied with the level of understanding that they gained in class or they can seek to develop a greater understanding outside of class.

And, the math teacher bears responsibility here as well.  Math teachers can customize their curriculum to ensure that students get what they need in class.   However, I believe that if we limit student activity to math class, compromises must be made.   For me, I already feel that it is difficult to cover all the standards in the given number of days with homework.   And, aside from standards, there is a certain level of pressure from the teachers of higher level classes to cover a large number of topics.   So, in a particular environment, a teacher may have to choose between breadth of material and time constraints for students.

In a world where all teachers were perfectly autonomous, I would be happy to eliminate homework and cover fewer topics.  Sometimes, I imagine if I was really smart, I would figure out a way to cover every topic in the given time and all kids would understand.   But, I haven't figured out that way and I haven't read any paper or book from a teacher who has.   If you are reading this article and you figured out how to cover every topic that Common Core requires in Algebra 2 in high school in the given number of days with no homework, please share your secret recipe.   I suspect I am not alone, maybe there are others that could be enlightened as well!

I have another unique consideration and that is I teach in a block schedule.   My students and I will complete all of Algebra 2 in about 90 days.   We started end of August and we'll be done by end of January.   Then, essentially, we start a new school year from Jan to Jun.   There is a theory in this environment that you just provide 2 lessons every day, but, from my experience, kids don't learn that way.  

Hope you don't mind my rambling, but I have more to say.   There is also a difference between homework and other work that needs to be done outside of class.   By the way, did I mention that I flipped my class?   My homework is watching videos and taking notes and sometimes completing Khan Academy exercises.   Classwork is where we solve problems together.   So, I feel that homework is less stressful in my class, just watch videos and take notes.   But back to my thoughts about other work outside of class.   I put pressure on my students to come in outside of class to work on improving their understanding.   I offer extra credit and I offer a variety of ways to earn it including finishing their classwork problems, studying for a test, reviewing the results of a test, Khan Academy and even some novel things like playing the game, Dragonbox.  So, with me, I am asking my students to do homework and I am asking them to put in some extra time aside from the homework.   Of course, not all students need to put in this extra time.  Some attend class, do their homework and get the grade they desire.  But, for students that are not getting the grade they desire, I feel they need to put in some extra time.

Don't know that I have any specific conclusion.  Just wanted to write down and share my thoughts and see what others think.

The Problem

A bit of a rant.
Two years after leaving FiOS for Comcast, I'm back in the FiOS family. It wasn't without aches and pains. The new router had to be near a place where they could run Cat-6 to the outside box, which was not near where the router was before. In order to get network jacks near where they were installed with Comcast, FIOS installed a network extender which caused a bunch of setup problems this afternoon after the installer left. I had to go and figure out how to configure the network extender, using a bunch of Google searches and reading of different documents and forum posts.
That wasn't the end of the drama. For my birthday, I bought myself a TiVo Bolt and some TiVo Minis for the bedrooms. The reason you want to do this is to save on equipment rental fees. The TiVo uses a cable card to access all the channels you subscribe to. However, because this isn't the "normal" install using the cable company's set-top box, there are different setup procedures which the installers aren't familiar with. While it appeared the cable card was working, I noticed that not all the channels I subscribed to were showing up. So, fixing that issue took a long call to the special Verizon cable card number and re-explaining multiple times the problem.

It took me about 8 hours to get the installation completed and reconfigured to be fully up and operational. The speed of the wireless network is great and the TiVo works better than it ever did on Comcast.

Slates and Clickers

Interesting discussion with a former student today. First of all a disclaimer- I take students complaints about other teachers with a grain of salt. Other teachers have come to me with complaints from my previous students, so I know we can't always match students and teachers perfectly.

With that in mind, I shall proceed. So, a former student comes to me to ask for help with an upcoming Algebra 2 test. Last year when he took my class, he failed because of zero effort. Nevertheless, he was not a horrible kid and he felt comfortable coming to me for help this year. It's funny because he's not very happy with his current teacher and now he's regretting that he didn't try harder last year when he had me- in his mind, the more reasonable teacher.

He complained about the pace of the class with the new teacher. Two lessons per day, no review day before tests and sometimes two tests in the same week. Then he started getting into other details. He said the teacher used slates to allow students to try problems and then show their results to the teacher. The teacher would then point to each slate and say whether it was right or wrong. This frustrated my student quite a bit because he would be told that his answer was wrong, but not why it was wrong. It's interesting to me because the slate idea has been kicked around for a few years now and some people think it's a cure all. It's one of those ideas that sounds good, but it's questionable whether it really is beneficial for students. Of course, like many good ideas, the level of success is dependent on implementation as well.

In comparison, I've been having some great luck with my clicker system. It's a technology system that is designed to give instant feedback to students just like the slates do, with several advantages over the slates- and in some people's minds, several disadvantages. With the clicker system, I create quizzes using PowerPoint. Each slide has a question and several multiple choice answers. Every student in the class gets a remote control and I have an infrared receiver attached to my computer. When I display the question, students press a button on the clicker to "vote" on the multiple choice answer they think is right. After all the students have voted on a particular question, a bar graph appears that shows how many students voted for each answer. If I want, I can also show them which answer is correct. So, like the slate system, students get instant feedback. Unlike the slate system, students get multiple choice answers, so they have something to work toward. Of course some teachers would complain that students may reverse engineer the answers or may copy answers from a neighbor and I'll admit there are problems. But like anything, there can be implementation issues and they need to be worked on. So, I'll continue to work.

Re-engineering the Math Classroom (textbook technology)

The textbook vendors are really coming around with technology support. McDougal-Littell writes the textbooks we use for most of the math classes at my high school. I just spent some time with my rep at a recent math conference. I was amazed to hear what they have to offer. They have an online system at their web site that can be used for quizzing students online or for assigning homework online. They also offer such expected things as an online graphing calculator.

I also inquired about newer, better test generators and they had a pleasant surprise. I had recently tried out the new test generator provided with some new textbooks we received, but a found it lacking. It was way too slow on my old dinosaur computer. And it was slow compared to the older test generator that I had been using. The only reason I was interested in a new test generator was because the old one didn't have enough questions to cover all the topics that we covered in the book. Also, I was hoping for more algorithmically generated questions versus static, database questions.

Well, I got lucky. Even though we had only recently received the new test generator, there was an even newer one that the vendor had available. They demonstrated it to me and it was awesome. It was fast and full of nice features. It did seem to lose some of the older features that I liked, but it had some cool new ones.

However, back to the online homework/assessment system. Over the years, I have used diagnostic exams from the Mathematics Diagnostic Test Project (MDTP) from University of California. They offer a nice set of tests that can be used for diagnostics, but also for benchmarking. Where are your students at when you first meet them and how do they improve after you're done with them? Well, the textbook vendor came up with an online assessment system that automatically diagnoses student weaknesses and then allows you, the teacher, to generate a list of remediation assignments and it will even let you pull together the files for the assignments and either print them or email them to the student!

These types of technology are bound to make teaching better and more efficient.

Re-engineering the Math Classroom

Fuzzy logic and Bayesian Networks could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of of multiple choice assessments- especially clicker system assessments.

Textbook test generators can be used to generate questions for clicker system quizzes.

Virtual manipulatives work great for pre-algebra classes especially NLVM with the virtual equation balance. Also there are several nice sites for tangrams. And don't forget Google Earth.

edhelper.com is a nice worksheet generator web site.

Algebra in Motion offers a set of Geometer's SketchPad visuals and animations to demonstrate a variety of algebra topics visually. For this reason alone, Geometer's SketchPad would be very useful.

Mimio has produced a low cost item that allows you to turn any whiteboard into a smartboard. This item used in conjunction with Geometer's SketchPad (a computer and a projector) could really help facilitate graphical drawing on the whiteboard and it's capture capability helps to eliminate redundant lesson delivery.

If you don't attend regular math conventions, conferences and workshops, you are missing out on a lot.

Supplemental materials are great and some textbooks make great supplemental materials. Harold Jacobs has written several textbooks that provide a meld of classic text based problems with modern critical thinking and problem solving challenges.


MathType is great and very useful for PowerPoint presentations, however, there are some other technologies coming along- like the Open Office formula editor- that may make formula entry easier. MathType actually is pretty good for use with SmartBoards or Mimio systems because of the big buttons and all the pointing and clicking. But if you want to type equations- and I believe this is the quickest method to enter formulas (or anything in the computer)- Open Office formula editor allows you to enter formulas like you enter equations into the graphing calculator. For example, x^2 + 3x -2 for a nice quadratic or (-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) over (2a) for the good old quadratic formula. Unfortunately, you can't have the best of both worlds. MathType does allow you to type formulas, but you have to learn the syntax of a typesetting system called TeX. Open Office allows you to type the formulas easily, but it does not allow you to migrate the formulas to Power Point easily- and that's a problem if you must use PowerPoint like I must with my Interwrite PRS clicker system.

Great day for being a teacher

What a fantastic day to be a teacher. One of my former students has been nominated by district to be flaunted in the annual report because of her experience at my high school as related to great strides she has made in life. Another student came in today to tell me that she had always loathed math even though she was good in other subjects. She paid me some high compliments and told me that other students were saying good things about me as well. Also, I've begun to use a classroom response system (CRS) in my classes and today I created a monster quiz for my Foundations of Math class. It was a really enjoyable way to spend 45 minutes with my students.

Thoughts on Math Topics

I have a lot of ideas about cool, practical, topical math lessons and I need to put them down somewhere. That somewhere might as well be here, no?

Water bottle math. These things are made from oil, they're filling up landfills, they're not very cost effective to recycle (when compared to aluminum) and we use billions of them. How many do we use in the US? In the world? How much oil would we save if we stopped using them? How much energy would we save?

Plastic bag math. Same kinds of questions as above.

Oil/energy math. Talk to district energy czar, Rick. Get some numbers from him or web site for national energy manager group for schools.

Can we power our own computers using bicycle generators?

Re-engineering the Math Classroom

This is, initially, an idea for a magazine article, but I'd like to turn it into a book. I'm currently a high school math teacher, but I have an engineering background. As a new teacher, one of the first things that I noticed is that I see a lot of new teachers re-inventing the wheel. In my district, we have a "beginning teacher program" called BTSA that provides mentors and training which is good. However, most of the teacher training that I received while earning my teaching credential and that I am currently receiving through the BTSA program comes in the form of theory. As a new teacher, I am then expected to translate this theory into practice in my classroom. While this current process is good and does produce good teachers, we do spend way too much time reinventing the wheel.

At my high school, we are trying to save money (and I hope we're also concerned about the environment) and one step towards that goal is to put a quota on copies. So, every teacher has a limit on the number of copies they can make and each department has a specific budget for copies. While I believe this is fiscally (and environmentally) responsible, it creates challenges for new teachers.

New teachers tend to lean on the copy machine to compensate for inefficient planning while getting used to teaching a particular subject. Also, new teachers tend to teach lower level math classes where students work better with worksheets than they do with a textbook. So, the copy machine used to be a coping mechanism for new teachers. Of course, it was a highly non-environmentally friendly coping mechanism and it's probably better to search for an alternative. Also, relying on the copy machine means that you have to plan far enough in advance to make the copies and on some days, the copies would have come in handy half way through the period. On other days, the 200 copies that you made in anticipation of necessity turn out not to be needed whatsoever.

This situation presented a problem that I never would have tried solving if it was not for the copy quota. So, two problems came together and forced me to think up a novel way to address them both at once. Here's what I discovered: although the worksheets seemed to pacify remedial or non-motivated students, they really weren't accomplishing as much as I at first thought they were. Now, I still use worksheets, they definitely have their time and place. However, I discovered that there's nothing wrong with printing out a worksheet just for me and then rationing out the problems via the whiteboard. This technique ensures that no students get too far ahead. Also, it gives me the opportunity to improvise and put some subtle, advanced twists on the problems as they go on the board. This way I can offer some basic problems and some advanced problems together. And, I can let the students know which is which so that they have some choice regarding what level of problem they will solve.

I've been fortunate enough to work with some decent textbooks that come with a reasonable supply of supplemental materials. The supplemental materials usually offer a fair number of exercises at various levels that can be rationed out to students. However, if for some reason your textbook does not come with supplemental materials, I have to recommend an Internet service called edhelper.com. I've looked at a number of Internet sites for lesson plans and I haven't found one that really has enough lesson plans to make the search effort worthwhile. However, if you are willing to let your textbook drive your lessons, edhelper.com's worksheets offer a fantastic drill supplement. The best thing about edhelper.com is that the worksheets are all dynamically generated by computer software. That means that if you pull up a worksheet on adding and subtracting integers, you can print out a new one every day if that's what is required for the class you are teaching.

And, when you are done with that particular topic, they offer many varieties of worksheets. Best of all, edhelper.com offers a variety of puzzles. These puzzles can be used as warm ups, sponge activities, cool downs, extra credit, post assessment time fillers and can even be used to address standards related to logic and reasoning.

Being a successful teacher is a lot like playing a game of chess. Good chess players know that there are several elements that affect the balance of the game. If you are playing a particularly good player, you must concentrate on your defense as well as your offense. Your goal is to continue to seek an advantage in one of the parameters of the game. These parameters include: position, where are you're pieces on the board, if you dominate the center early, you'll have an advantage; tempo, are you continually moving into desired positions or are you being forced to move as a reaction to your opponent; number and kind of pieces, which pieces do you have left and which pieces does your opponent have left; and, finally, thinking several moves ahead, will a short term sacrifice result in long term gains?

Of course, you can't directly relate these strategies to teaching in the classroom, but there are definitely parallels. As a teacher, you have a variety of tools at your disposal. You can use these tools to influence student learning. You may not be able to force all students to learn all the time, but you can definitely improve your odds and your success rate by integrating a variety of techniques.

20 Summers

I had been an engineer and an entrepeneur, but I changed careers to become a teacher like my wife. Around that time, as a hobby, both my wife and I enjoyed searching for treasure at local garage sales and selling some of our ill gotten gains on eBay. One summer we went on a vacation to Michigan to visit my family. For giggles, we decided to try visiting some garage sales in the area. While driving around, I got the idea to buy a motorhome and spend summers travelling the country searching for garage sales, making new friends and finding buried treasure wherever it might be hiding. That was twenty summers ago and this is a collection of stories regarding our summer adventures.

Time to think about my classroom clock

Classroom clocks tend to encourage non-motivated students to pack up early. So, I covered mine. Next year, I'm thinking of putting a message over the clock. Maybe, "Time to Think." I heard of a teacher who just covered the clock with, "Now." I like that one too. I'm also considering fabricating my own digital clock that messes with my students' heads a bit. The clock will go forward at double speed for the first half of the period and then it will go at half speed for the second half of the period.

Latin American Road Rally

Last year I taught math at Nordhoff High School in Ojai and I came up with the idea for a road trip project for my Algebra 1 class. This year I taught Foundational Math at Newbury Park High School and I expanded on the idea of the road trip. Since most of my students were from Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America, I decided to make the road trip a Mexican road trip. I really liked the idea because in Mexico, the metric system is used and that requires some ability for U.S. travellers to convert gallons to litres and Fahrenheit to Celsius and even dollars to pesos.

This summer, I'd like to really expand on this idea with full blown Latin American Road Rally that integrates math with social studies, history and geography. I can include all sorts of neat stuff that I ran across this year including slope story graphs, logic puzzles, unit conversions and whatever else I can think of.
